As more research is completed and care quidelines become more well developed, nursing should take a leadership role studying the needs of the late preterm infant. Because nurses are the primary caregivers in the newborn nursery, they have experience and depth of knowledge about this topic and can provide important input reqarding care and appropriate follow-up for these babies. Nurse can play a major role in policy making through shared governance and communication with their managers to raise awareness in their own organizations. As nurses, we have the potential to have a positive impaction long-term outcomes of late preterm infants if we pay close attention to the emerging literature on the topic and work toward appropriate policy changes in hospitals about care of these infants.
