The study compares the expected costs for pavement construction,
maintenance and road lighting, over 30-year service life of a
highway tunnel in the Centre of Italy, near Rome. As regards this
tunnel, the study compares the hypothetical overall costs of two
concrete and one asphalt pavement. Concrete pavement surface
is whiter and more reflective than asphalt pavement. Therefore,
concrete pavement needs lower illuminance to ensure equal luminance
values. As a matter of fact the lighting system in a tunnel
with a concrete pavement, either CRCP or JPCP, requires a total
energy power 29% lower than an asphalt pavement.
