The ER center is often the first place where patients are received for various internal medicine, surgery, and intensive care unit issues. Because of the crowded nature and urgency of the ER, most nursing activities are functional and performed quickly. As such, most communications are unilateral, without effective interaction (Merk & Bu¨ker, 2013; Yun & Park, 2008). Inthisregard, itisbelievedthat, although functional nursing helps nurses perform effectively, it lacks the principles such as listening to patients’ needs and offering time to think, as outlined in Morse and Proctor (1998).
