After the simple procedure of char being processed into green charcoal by EFA, an efficient fuel is ready to be sold to families in need of an alternative to firewood. But why stop the level of social impact there? To sell the green charcoal, EFA trains a network of female retailers stretching throughout rural Uganda. After the training, EFA provides the woman a kiosk to do business from. Until now, the women that participate in selling green charcoal to their communities have increased their income by over 100%.
Since its inception in 2010, EFA’s achievements include the claim that 30, 000 people in Uganda use green charcoal, leading to the prevention of 500, 000 tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere from burning wood. In addition, 2500 farmers are processing waste into char, and 260 women are selling green charcoal in disadvantaged communities across the country.
Recently, the NGO Carbon Roots International contacted EFA regarding its business model. EFA gladly shared their knowledge and now the business model is being replicated exactly in Haiti by CRI.
