In this study, the level of knowledge about breast cancer
and heredity was shown to be at an intermediate level, with a
score of 5.33 2.70. This was similar to another study, in
which knowledge scores related to breast cancer among
female university students living in one area of Korea was
8.79 3.28 on a zero to 18 scale (Yang & Moon, 2009). This
study used a different knowledge measurement instrument
for breast cancer, and the knowledge scores on breast cancer
and heredity were slightly below median (48.4%). In Turkey,
Karayurt et al. (2008) examined knowledge about the risk
factors of breast cancers among high school students, and the
correct answer rate was 7.1% (recent oral contraceptive use)
and 11.4% (late menopause) (Karayurt et al., 2008). Thus,
high school students in Turkey did not demonstrate a highlevel of knowledge regarding breast cancer and breast selfexamination.
