I use EXACTLY the same stuff. I use Differin at night, and Duac in the am. Now, with Differin, really, use only a pea size. Your side effects could be from using too much, and it doesn't take much for it to be TOO much. That's what happened to me and all I did was use a little less.
Now, Duac can be VERY drying (a lot more so than Differin) and that should be used only to barely cover the skin and rub in well.
With using either one, however you use them, whether at night or in the morning, after you apply it, wait a few minutes for it to soak in (I literally watch the clock until 3 min are up) and then I apply a good moisterizer because it greatly, greatly helps with all that dry skin. Then, if it's in the morning, after applying a moisterizer I apply a tinted moisterizer on after that. Your skin will thank you for replenishing the moisture loss from topicals! The reason it's tinted is because I use it in place of foundation- foundations are a big time pore clogger. I've even had department store make up reps tell me that if I don't have to use foundation, then don't. Also, use a loose powder. Pressed powders contain a wax (to hold all that powder together in the compact) and then that wax gets transfered to your face and then you get clogged pores. So use a loose powder.
And yes, your derma is right.... just ride it out, get past those few weeks, and you'll be thanking him/her. I actually told my derma I have never seen my skin so good before.
Just give it time... it works. =)
