During the follow-up period (median, 40.1 months), we
observed 291 incident cases of hypertension. The distribution
of potential confounding variables across quartiles
of total sedentary behavior is given in Table 1. Higher
levels of sedentary behaviors were associated with being
male, younger, not engaging in leisure-time physical activities,
having a self-diagnosis of hypercholesterolemia
and consuming fewer fruits and vegetables, and consuming
more sodium and alcohol
