Dark clouds may have threatened the day, but Canterbury's ninety-ninth graduation exercises occurred outside as planned on Friday, May 27.
The graduation program began at 9:45 am with the traditional academic procession from Sheehan House to the Chapel of Our Lady, where the graduates and their families attended the Celebration of the Eucharist, presided over by Fr. Mark Connell, founder and president of the San Miguel Academy in Newburgh, New York.
The Graduation exercises, held on the lawn in back of Sheehan and Duffy Houses, began at 11:00 am with opening remarks by Headmaster Tom Sheehy. Tom awarded the Roderick Clarke '46 Distinguished Academic Achievement Awards, which go to the students with the highest GPA for the year in each form. Other awards included the Robert M. Steele '72 and Charles R. Huntington Scholar-Athlete trophies, awards in courses, and the Class of 1987 Citizenship Award. A list of prizes awarded at graduation and their recipients may be found here.
This year's graduation speaker was Nick Ragland '88, current trustee and CFO of Gorilla Glue, based in Cincinnati. He was followed by valedictory speaker, Angus Li, who spoke of leadership. While hitting the high marks of what it takes to be a leader at Canterbury School, Angus injected some humor into his speech when he compared club membership numbers of the math club and the cheese club. At nineteen members, Angus noted to classmate and cheese club head Denny Chen, math club held the lead.
Tom, one of this year's three Cantuarian dedicatees, awarded the diplomas assisted by Elyse Soifersmith, another of this year's dedicatees.
The ceremony concluded with a benediction by Fr. Mark. Faculty lined the wall by Sheehan House's patio to shake hands and to bid one last farewell to the graduates.
