Results obtained in the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation
(SSF) of the solid fractions of the pretreated materials
using Ethanol Red yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and Accellerase
1500 are shown in Fig. 2. Consistent with the results obtained
in the enzymatic hydrolysis of this material, the alkaline pretreatments
with NaOH and NH3 exhibited higher concentrations of ethanol
in the fermentation broth. The steam explosion pretreatment
exhibited a slight increase in the concentration of ethanol in comparison
with the soaking pretreatment with ammonia. The solid
fraction from the NaOH pretreated elephant grass allowed obtaining
an ethanol yield of 67.75 mg ethanol/g of biomass after 24 h
fermentation.
