Extrinsic motivation can be achieved through human resources
management practices such as financial compensation or promotion. Money
generally provides satisfaction independent of the actual activity. Extrinsic
motivation can be achieved by linking the financial motivations of employees
to organizational goals and benefits. When tasks are not complex, it is generally
sufficient to motivate employees extrinsically. But when tasks are complex,
such as the development of a new technology or product, both intrinsic and
extrinsic motivation will be required to promote knowledge sharing.
