Rice University has been providing professional development in
chemistry using the Concept Development approach since
1998 and the Data First approach more recently. Over 300
chemistry teachers have participated in these PD programs, and
they consistently report that the programs have helped them
increase their understanding of chemistry concepts, as shown in
Figure 5 for one cohort of 39 teachers. They also state that the
Concept Development Studies book deepened their understanding
of chemistry; 95% of our teachers report that the
“CDS helped deepen my understanding of Chemistry,” 35%
agreeing and 60% strongly agreeing with this statement. This is
confirmed by pre- and postconcept tests that have been taken
by teachers annually in the program (2012−2013 results are
shown).
