5.7 Personal fall arrest system - Is a device worn by the associate that will arrest (stop) an associate's fall from a working level. This device will limit the distance an associate will fall to 1.8 meter (6 feet) (Maximum deceleration distance to 1.0 meter (3.5 feet)). It consists of an anchorage, connectors, a body harness, and may also include a lanyard, deceleration device, lifeline, or suitable combination of these devices. On large roofs equipped with more than one anchorage system the personal fall arrest system (lanyard) must allow for connection to another anchorage system before disconnecting from the system in use. Therefore two lanyards will be needed in these cases. A fall arrest system is required if any risk exists that a worker may fall from an elevated position, as a general rule, the fall arrest system should be used anytime a working height of 1.8 meter (6 feet) or more is reached. Working height is the distance from the walking/working surface to a grade or lower level. A fall arrest system will only come into service should a fall occur. A full-body harness with a shock-absorbing lanyard or a retractable lifeline is the only product recommended. A full-body harness distributes the forces throughout the body, and the shock-absorbing lanyard decreases the total fall arresting forces.
5.8 Safety Monitoring System - Means a safety system in which a competent person is responsible for recognizing and warning employees of fall hazards.
5.9 Walking/Working Surface - Means any surface, whether horizontal or vertical on which an employee walks or works, including, but not limited to, floors, roofs, ramps, bridges, runways, form work and concrete reinforcing steel but not to include ladders, vehicles, or trailers, on which employees must be located in order to perform their job duties.
