In modern age malnutrition continues to be a serious
public health problem and has for a long time been
recognised as a consequence of poverty since most of
the world’s malnourished children live in the developing
nations of Asia, Africa and Latin America where those
mostly affected are from low income families.1 The
children from households with a low or very low
socioeconomic status had 2.5 times the risk of being
underweight relative to children who came from
households with middle to upper socioeconomic status.2
