HarpinPSS, a proteinaceous elicitor secreted from pathogenic
Gram-negative bacteria, is necessary for bacteria to gain entry
into the cell. It interacts with certain plant molecules and is
recognized by its receptors in the extracellular matrix of the
plant cell wall to mediate HR. HRAP has the ability to dissociate
harpinPSS multimeric forms into dimers and monomers that
trigger a stronger HCD necrosis in sweet pepper (Chen et al.,
2000). The elicitor-induced resistance is not specific against particular pathogens, and therefore it may be a very useful strategy
for the development of broad spectrum resistance.
