INTRODUCTION
As one of the fastest aging countries, Japan has large
population of demented elderly. The most of care provided
to these demented has been taken by family caregivers even
though the Japanese government has introduced the longterm
care insurance since 2000. This paper briefly describes
demographics of the demented elderly and their family caregivers.
Then, how the long-rterm care insurance affect on
family caregiving of the demented elderly. Finally, paper
discusses two noteworthy issues regarding family caregiving;
elder abuse, and caregiving murder and double suicide.
Recent Japanese research on these issues will be introduced.
