There is an increasing awareness in the ICZM community of the
importance of catchment/coast coupling: the recognition that in
many coastal areas, coastal management cannot be separated from
watershed management (In the context of estuaries and related
coastal systems, Wolanski (2007) refers to the processes that bear
on these questions as “estuarine ecohydrology.”). The catchment
boundary is a well-defined, natural boundary for understanding
hydrological and nutrient linkages between catchment and coast,
and even to island or reef systems proximal to the coast (Richmond
et al., 2007).
