The Study
The study made a survey of textbooks recommended and used in public schools of the
sample under consideration. Three major textbooks found in the survey are New General
Mathematics (NGM) for West Africa; Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN)
Mathematics; Science Teachers’ Association of Nigeria (STAN) Mathematics and very few
otherswhich are perhaps numerically negligible. NGM is the most commonly used by many
teachers and schools (Table 1). The number of items for availability, relevance, suitability
and adequacy of each of the eleven features are summarized in table 2. The study considered
the degree of availability, relevance, suitability and adequacy of certain features in the
textbooks (Table 3). The standard for evaluation is in comparison with the expectations of the
National Mathematics Curriculum, and also on the capability of the books to enhance
desirable learning outcomes. The evaluation was based on the opinion of the Mathematics
teachers who are direct users of the textbooks.
