requirements for adoption may represent a bottleneck for
adoption that should be further investigated: i.e., Q-GAP
could be tailored to diminish those labour intensive
requirements. While we found that different channels of
information, governmental and non-governmental, were
essential in convincing farmers to participate, contrary to
our expectations we did not find a significant farmer-tofarmer
diffusion effect. Rice trainings and government
contacts were essential in keeping the farmers in the
program. We also determined that land renters were less
likely to be long-term adopters than were pure land owners,
suggesting less motivation among pure renters (less concerned
by their impact and more likely to have to transmit
their new benefits to land owners through increased land
rent). A better policy that can control and regulate ‘land rent
prices’ could potentially improve and encourage farmers
who are renting land to adopt this certification.
