Total polyphenolic (TPP) and flavonoid contents
It is well known that plant phenolics are highly effective free
radical scavengers and antioxidant systems. Phenolic compounds
have been reported to act as antioxidants (Rice-Evans, Miller, &
Paganga, 1997). Possible antioxidant mechanisms associated with
phenolic compounds are the donation of a hydrogen or electron or
the stabilization or scavenging of radicals (Rice-Evans et al., 1997).
The potential of phenolic compounds to serve as hydrogen or
electron-donating agents relates to their reduction power, as
measured at 700 nm.
