And there is the farming and distribution. Supermarkets need huge quantities of nearly identical produce to be efficient. Whereas food used to be grown nearby, in season, and driven to the local stores and markets, the supermarkets take over huge areas of land and produce food for the whole developed world, flying it around the planet. Again, the evidence suggests that this is not good. And do we really need tomatoes all year around? Can’t we learn to enjoy the seasonal treats that local farming brings once again?
