Initial discussions with instructional designers demonstrate the importance of copyright concerns in an online environment. Maintaining copyright compliance is one of the most challenging issues when dealing with information resources in the online environment. The instructional designers
also commented on the variety of platforms through which online instruction is currently offered at ASU. Blackboard, the official course management provider at the university, is not the only course management system at ASU. Some designers use Moodle and Sakai, and in one a department created their own system built on Flash. Absence of course management software standardization creates a challenge for librarians designing online instructional tools. For many lower-level courses, deans and directors are considering having students purchase commercial “comprehensive” packages that include videos, a course management system textbook and course readings.
