3.3.6 Topcoat spray, curing and baking cost
The final phase of the process is topcoat spray. After priming, the metal work pieces enter
the topcoat spray booth. Depending on the colour to be achieved, a solid colour topcoat
may be applied or a basecoat may be applied followed by a wet-on-wet clear coat. After
topcoating, the product enters the final baking oven in which the topcoat is cured. Typical
costs of these activities are similar to the previous phase, including equipment maintenance
and repair, floor space cost, salaries and general administrative expenses. The cost driver is
also the number of products passed through this stage.
