After the impaction is removed, maintenance therapy often lasting for 6 to 12 months is necessary to promote easy passage of stool and to prevent stool retention. Maintenance therapy include mineral oil, stool softeners, and laxatives. Stool softeners are often ineffective for severe constipation; laxative therapy may be necessary to return the rectum to its normal size. Polyethylene glycol is a more favorabla constipation intervention than lactulose (Dupont, Leluyer, Maamri, et al, 2005). Polyethylene glycol increases fluid in the colon. The additional volume of fluid stimulates the urge to defecate.
