The levels and stages of moral growth
In Kohlberg ‘s system, growing up in moral judgment consists of advancing through three levels of development, from a premoral or preconventional level to one that involves conforming to society’s conventions and finally to a top level that transcends convention and is based on personal, self-accepted moral principles. This top level is sometimes called postconventional or autonomous. Each level contains two stages, as defined in table 16.1.
