Hey, apparently I misspoke about the Volkmann canals at tutoring today. So here's the deal: Volkmann canals are the channels which link Haversian canals to the outer surface of the bone. They admit branches of the larger arteries in the periosteum into the bone to connect with the smaller vessels in the Haversian canals. They also link Haversian canals together to create vascular anastomoses. Volkmann canals are not the canaliculi that extend between osteocytes. These canaliculi bear cytoplasmic extensions from one osteocyte to another and allow the transmission of nutrients and cell-cell signals. Hope this doesn't cause additional confusion.
