method tests for resistance to polycultures, but results are subjective.
Materials to fabricate environmental chambers for the AWPA
test are initially costly and chambers are cumbersome to clean
between tests. Specimens in the environmental chamber are
susceptible to possible influence of volatiles from adjacent samples
so multiple chambers are needed to randomize specimens and/or
isolate volatile treatments. Overall, the quantitative colorimetric
XTT micro-assay is rapid, sensitive and results correlate well with
current standardized test methods.
