15.1 Exposed live parts
[Basic requirements]
Exposed live parts not covered by potting materials etc. and insulating materials holding them,
which may give rise to fire and smoke emission hazards owing to deterioration in the insulation
caused by accumulated dust and dirt or by dew condensation during long-term use, shall be
constructed in such a way to incorporate measures against the accumulation of dust and dirt and
dew condensation during long-term use, in order to prevent smoke emission, ignition and fire
hazards.
[Design standards]
1) Same as the Basic requirements mentioned above.
2) The insulation caps used for areas subject to high voltages shall satisfy all of the following
conditions:
a) They shall have no air bubbles (voids) or cracks.
b) They shall be flexible and adhere tightly.
c) They shall have a high resistance to ozone.
3) This requirement is regarded as satisfied, if exposed live parts are covered with materials rated
UL 94V-0 or higher or covered with a grounded metal case.
Note: Care shall be taken since the insulated areas of the wiring near the heating unit are
susceptible to deterioration.
[Criteria]
1) Compliance is determined by visual inspection.
2) Compliance is determined on the basis of design specifications and by visual inspection or by
testing.
3) Compliance is determined by visual inspection, and on the basis of the design specifications and
fire retardancy.
