As the dry season continues, more accessible feed sources are gradually depleted and households are required to commit increasingly more labour to procure feed for their cattle, either manually gathering feed if the stock are penned or tethered, or moving their cattle more often and further away from the house when grazed. The quality of available feed declines significantly as the dry season progresses with greater dependence on less palatable, less digestible and low-protein feed. Households attempt to address the shortfall in the quantity and quality of available feed at this time of year through the use of tree leaves, banana leaves and stem, cashew apple or, in limited cases perennial legumes such as Gliricidia spp, Leucaena spp and Sesbania spp, or conserved crop residues.
