As time passed, a trust relationship was formed between the hospital staff and the family. I learned that these parents were butchers, and each member of the community had a different role to provide for the community. For some reason, the fact that Amish can be butchers surprised me. My naivety was excruciating. I told the mother that I was unfamiliar with Amish culture but was aware that they opposed technology. I asked why they were allowing this technology for their son. She replied that they are selective in their use of technology. They oppose anything that they feel will bring them further away from God. They had discussed Jacob’s hospitalization and determined the use of this lifesaving technology was not bringing them further from God, that it was for Jacob’s best interest and, in a sense, was bringing them closer to God.
