A facelift for Christchurch's landmark Bridge of Remembrance, damaged in the earthquakes, will be ready in time for next year's Anzac Day celebrations.
Associate Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Nicky Wagner today released images of the new design for the bridge and its surrounds.
Since being damaged in the 2010 and 2011 quakes, the bridge's Triumphal Arch and its foundation structure has undergone repairs and strengthening work.
"The next step is to ensure its appearance is something Christchurch can be proud of," Ms Wagner said.
Changes include removing the walls at the western end of the bridge and the construction of a grand staircase, a new ramp creating a processional connection to the neighbouring bronze statue of First World War hero and Victoria Cross winner Henry Nicholas, and paving which links with the river promenade and in-ground lighting to highlight the Triumphal Arch.
The moves have been planned in consultation with Christchurch Returned Services' Association (RSA).
City Care and JFC Limited have been awarded the contract to begin constructing the next sections of Te Papa Ōtākaro /Avon River Precinct, which includes the Bridge of Remembrance and adjacent Park of Remembrance.
Work is due to begin mid-January, with Ms Wagner saying work is expected to be complete by April 25 next year.
