Neonatal and infant mortality per 1000 live births were almost doubled in carriers of thalassemia
major (24.7 and 37.0, respectively) than in controls (14.7). However, neonatal and
infant mortality per 1000 live-births were much higher in couples of AA/b-thal trait
(160.0, respectively) and AS/S-b-thal (125.0, respectively) genotypes than in controls
(14.7).
