An example of Kew’s commitment to conservation and scientific research is their Millennium Seed Bank Partnership. This ex-situ (literally, off-site) program aims to build a seed bank from around the globe; concentrating on those species which are under threat of extinction. By conserving, collecting and growing these plants outside of the area where they are under threat, the species have a chance at survival. Over 10% of endangered species from around the world have already been added to the bank and Kew’s target is 25% by 2020. It is even possible for the public to become involved via the ‘adopt a seed’ program.
