MIR spectroscopic study of living cells: One of the goals of our work is to obtain a better understanding of the structure of cells and of their behavior. Another important goal is to find the spectral differences between normal and diseased cells. Our general aim is the use of Fiber-optic Evanescent Wave Spectroscopy (FEWS) technique in the middle-infrared (MIR) range to study live biological cells and tissues in vitro and in vivo.
Most of the research in the area of MIR spectroscopy of biological cells reported in the literature has been performed on dehydrated cells. Sedimentation FEWS is a novel method which makes it possible to carry out measurements on living biological cells.
We are inventing different techniques of making biological sensors based on MIR transparent fibers best suitable for living cells FEWS. With the use of such sensors we could study the very complex behavior of living healthy and diseased cells. We carry out numerous experiments, collecting and translating spectral data in the MIR range of living cells of different types in different physical conditions. We address questions of the impact of small environmental interferences on the behavior of living cells.
