The influence of soil organisms on crop performance will
vary with agricultural management practices.
We expect that communities of soil organisms from unmanaged soils will be more
beneficial to plant growth than those from agricultural soil receiving
high-inputs of fertilizer.
Furthermore, if conventional agricultural management
selects for AM fungi that are inferior mutualists then we predict that in high-input
agroecosystems, rhizosphere soil organisms from a novel crop will
be more beneficial than those from continuous monoculture of the
same crop.
