The levels of anxiety and depression in our study population corresponded to those in a general adult population (Crawford et al. 2001). The level of depression of family members was low whereas the level of anxiety was slightly under the score for non-case of anxiety. Other studies have found that spouses of persons with CHF have a higher level of anxiety (Chung et al. 2009) and depression (Pihl et al. 2005, Chung et al. 2009) than the general population. Our findings do not corroborate this, and might be explained by that 41% of the participants do not live together with the patient.
