For super-finishing operations, if this dirt layer is not distributed homogeneously, the end machined surface shows inhomogeneity regarding surface roughness and optical appearance, e.g. a cross like appearance mainly due to the fluid flow induced transportation of the debris. It is in this region that one observes glossy effect and lower surface roughness. On the other hand, matt regions have thinner layer of the dirt during machining resulting in higher energy dissipation in the workpiece material and thus different crater shape, surface roughness and the optical appearance.
