Lesson COG 28
Task: Identify size. Prerequisites: ADT 4, COG 25 Concept: The knowledge of size has a direct practical use in almost any environment. This sample activity seeks to place emphasis on the function of size by using items with which the student regularly interacts. The items selected should be ones that ap-pear to provide pleasure to the student. Behavioral Objective: When presented with three items that arc similar except for size (one being stn.-dl, another medium, and the third large), the student will point to or otherwise identify the one of the size randomly presented by the instructor to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials. Materials: A wide range of materials are encouraged in this sample lesson. Sugges-tions include modeling clay, food items the student enjoys, balloons, balls, three glasses with different levels of juice, books of different sizes, and three different-size spoons. Task Analysis: 1. Review with the student the ability to match objects of different sizes (small, medium, and large) by first using modeling clay of identical shapes and colors but of different sizes, as in the prerequisite ',match by size" (COG 25). 2. Modify Step 1, replacing the clay samples with items common to the student's environment. When the student answers correctly, allow him or her to inter-• act with the selection as appropriate to the item (i.e., eating food items, drink-ing juice, or playing with a specific toy). • 3. Modify Step 2, reducing the matching concept and replacing it with a verbal request: .Show me the (large, medium, or small) (name of item)." Physically guide the student as needed. 4. Reduce all prompting and continue until the objective is met.
