Mind-Set No. 12: Embrace the Tao of Teaching
You have probably developed a wide range of principles and strategies to use.
Nearly everyone has his or her favorite teacher, writer, or philosopher. The writings of Lao Tzu have been a favorite of mine. Translated, Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching means "the book of how things work." Written in the fifth century BC, it has long been a classic in both Chinese and world literature. Its much-loved wisdom has well withstood the test of time.
It is likely that many of Lao Tzu's sayings are familiar to you (e.g., "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step"). Not surprisingly, the best teachers seem to include ancient wisdom as well as modern interpretations in their teaching toolbox. John Heider (1985) wrote a beautiful adaptation of Lao Tzu's work titled The Tao of Leadership. The following is a synopsis of its philosophy:
