is a significant ritual in the life of a newly wed couple in the Indian subcontinent as it refers to the maiden night after marriage between the husband and wife when they go for Consummation for the first time with acceptance of the society. Until then, both the bride and bridegroom are believed as virgins to the knowledge of society. Hence to emphasize its importance, the sleeping bed of newly wed couple is decorated with flowers which is believed to bring sweetness to their relationship.[1] This is an important custom followed in Vedic Hindu Marriages (Marriage in Hinduism). In fact, not only among Hindus but this tradition also extends to Jains, Buddhism, Sikhs[2] and Muslims. In some traditions, especially in eastern India "Suhag Raat" is also referred to as "Fourth Night" because this ritual is observed on the 4th night of marriage,[3][4] considering the marriage date as day one.
