Fashion is something dealt with every single day, whether we acknowledge it or not. Even people who state that they do not care what they wear on a certain day choose clothing items and accessories that say a lot about them and how they feel that day.
Many different things dictate fashion. Musicians usually influence what people usually wear. Other people that can possibly dictate fashion are cultural icons, political figures, and royalty. Many magazines are printed daily that are full of celebrities and models displaying new styles of clothes and new fashion styles. Even people in the 1700s practically worshiped fashion magazines and sketches from dressmakers to see the newest and latest styles.
Fashion can reveal a lot about a person. Clothes reveal groups people might be in. Styles are a way to show who you are, but they also create many different stereotypes and distance between groups of people. Acceptance or rejection of style is a reaction to the society we live in currently.
Clothing is a language which tells a story about the person who wears it. "Clothes create a wordless means of communication that we all understand," according to Katherine Hamnett, a top British fashion designer.
Some people choose to wear clothes that are not "mainstream" because they want to deliver the message of separation and difference upon others. People in society tend to not understand why people do this and take it upon themselves to separate these people in different groups because of the way they express themselves through fashion. I believe that everyone should be able to wear whatever they want without being judged for being different than everyone else.
