Fungi have been part of the industrial scale production of 10 of the 20 most profitable therapeutic products including two cholesterol reducing statins (known as lovastatin and mevastatin, which are secondary metabolites derived from the polyketide pathway), the antibiotic, penicillin (a β lactam product of amino acids), and the immunosuppressant cyclosporine A (a cyclic undecapeptide product of amino acids produced by fungi).
