With reference to the storage issue, the data collected showed
that 60% of the surveyed facilities have centralized temporary
waste storage area. However, 48% of these storage areas were not
secured. This implies that most of hazardous healthcare waste
storage rooms are not locked nor have restricted access. About
44% of the storage areas are not dedicated solely to the assigned
purpose. Sterilization and cleaning of storage areas is carried out
on a daily basis at 43% of these facilities. However, sites inspections
revealed that some storage areas lack ventilation, adequate storage
temperature, and are located near sensitive areas such as treatment
rooms and kitchens.
