When an organization consists of individuals with the same value orientations, policies and procedures follow naturally and smoothly, and expectations are mutually understood. When an organization consists of individuals with different value orientations, three possibilities exist: the organization can lack awareness of the differing value orientations or their significance and proceed with the orientations of the dominant group; the differences can be acknowledged and made explicit but those in the minority forced to assimilate; or the differences can be acknowledged and pluralis- tic norms developed that meet the needs of all. These and related approaches will be discussed in subsequent chapters. In this chapter we will look at the notion of culture and cultural influences on multicultural team dynamics.
