Dietary inclusion of barley grain to replace wheat reduced CATTD of DM and GE in diets, similar to observations ingrowing-finishing pigs (Leek et al., 2007). The reduced CATTD of DM and GE in barley diets are associated with the greater fibre content (Fairbairn et al., 1999) and different non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) profile in barley than wheat grain. For NSP profile, barley contains 14 times more -glucan than wheat, but only half the arabinoxylan of wheat (De Lange, 2000).
