As a next step decided on at the 2011 Dialogue to further investigate regulatory variances in submarine cable protection, repair and maintenance, the CTI engaged the APEC Policy Support Unit (PSU) to prepare an economic impact analysis on trade and investment impacts of submarine cable disruptions. The report, entitled “Economic Impact of Submarine Cable Disruptions,” included a follow-up survey to the 2009 questionnaire and assesses and measures
the economic impact of submarine cable disruptions on trade and investment within APEC economies. The study reviews current approaches towards minimizing disruptions as a result of submarine cable damage and proposes approaches for member economies to reduce the negative impact on trade and investment caused by such disruptions. Results from the included survey are highlighted in the analysis below.
