The non-working day
Research on US army infantry[12] showed
that the average soldier spends 25 minutes of
a typical “training day” receiving instruction
and 57 minutes practising the task; the rest of
the day is swallowed up by parades, being “en
route”, polishing boots, hanging about, etc.
Similar research[13] shows that a substantial
part of the manager’s day is spent doing things
that cannot be unambiguously linked to the
accomplishment of specific tasks.
