The main objective of our present operational research has been to integrate advanced technologies, tools and protocols into a state-ofthe-art web-based GIS application, to assist on early fire warning, fire control and coordination of firefighting forces.
Unlike our previous work which was not a web-based application (Kalabokidis et al.,
2012), the proposed system enables professionals to take advantage of GIS capabilities without needing to locally install complex softwarecomponents.
Other innovations include the parallelization of the code for the creation of fire risk maps and forecast weather maps, which is applied on a High Performance Computing (HPC) scheme.
Functionalities for fire control have been also added (e.g. fleet tracking and shortest
routes).
