The Government's efforts to increase the geological knowledge base through exploration for a wide range of minerals, curtailed for a number of years in the 1980s due to the civil war in the country, has been ongoing since 2006. This has enabled mineral sector development in the country and as a result several mining projects have been initiated (SEAMIC, 2006). With the 2002 Mining Law, the Government encouraged national and foreign investment in mineral exploitation by removing obstacles and by creating tax benefits and diversifying the legal mechanisms through which Mozambican and foreign investors can participate in mining operations (PLMJ, 2009). 2014 saw the introduction of a new Mining Law and Mining Tax Law, along with new legislation for the oil and gas industry, further enhancing the legal framework for the mineral industry.
