The exact relation between Modern English and Modern German should be clearly understand. First of all,one is not derived from the other, as so frequently the poplar belief. The number of words in the English languan that have been directly borrowed from German is comparatively small of them having been borrowed in recent years. The same is true of the English words in the German language. THE TWO languages are, however,of the same stock and they resemble each other because, like the other Germanic languages, they are derived from some common original Germanic or Teutonic parent speech. This original language is no longer in existence and no written records of it remain. But its existence can be inferred from the comparative study of the various Germanic languages. just as the former existence of a perent Indo-European speech can be inferred for all the different Indo-European languages.
