Interventions and instruments that support the free flow of knowledge refer either to the implementation and improvement of the technical infrastructure of communication or the cultural climate in organizations and the motivation of their employees to share with and learn from one another. With respect to the technical infrastructure of knowledge distribution, the development of computer technology, networks, intranets, local area networks(LANs),and specialized groupware-based knowledge-managements , Sovereign Hill, Live-Link, Taxonomist, and Win cite, can greatly support the diffusion and filtering of knowledge within organizations. Consulting firms were among the first to implement information networks. Kinsey & Company, for instance, introduced the Rapid Response Network,Andersen Consulting did the same with the knowledge X change System(Probst, Raub, and Romhardt 1997 : 240) and Arthur D. Little,Inc. began using the ADL Link system. An important challenge posed by these systems is the filtering of stored information and continual updating needed in order to keep the database manageable. Two examples of tools supporting diffusion as a learning process are grapevine and learning histories.
